Melting Polar ice

I've been following the news on the demise of The Akademik Shokalskiy, it "... had been retracing Sir Douglas Mawson's Antarctic expedition and conducting scientific research when sea ice closed in about 1,500 nautical miles south of Hobart."

Maybe my ears deceived me, but did I hear at one stage, that there was research being done to examine the melting ice caps?

How ironic if that was true...
