What happens to Koalas in bushfires?
A while back, while I was writing about the raging bushfires, Kirsten asked me what is happening to the fauna. There is a story in my local newspaper about koalas burned in raging bushfires.
The survivors are battling smoke inhalation and ,severe burns and starvation.
At the Box Hill vet clinic, hundreds of koalas are being treated, and it seems about half of the forest population had been wiped out. About fifty koalas had to be put down in the first week of the rescue attempt.

Can people take them in as pets or would that be like trying to domesticate a monkey?
They are such adorable animals it's heartbreaking to see them suffer. Koalas I mean...not monkeys.
Intol. Koalas are a protected species, like all marsupials of Australia. I don't think it would be possible to domesticate them. Of course people do have wombats as pets but that is still against the law.
Poor animals... It's not easy when your enviroment and food dissapear just like that. How about the kangaroos? I assume they also have had a hard time.
It's difficult for the human when such things happen, but I think it is even worse for the animals.
Kirsten, kangaroos are very fast, they can escape, but koalas are like the sloth in speed of movement.
