Selling a crime story (crime does pay)

There seems to be a trend in Australia where criminals profit from their crimes by selling their stories to the media or publishing books about their misdeeds. Shapelle Corby has had her assets frozen by the government whilst she sits in jail in Indonesia for drug smuggling conviction. A few years ago a well known hit man (Mark Chopper Reid) had a best seller where he boasted about his crimes. He even has a web site.
There are new initiatives around the world to confiscate the wealth of known Mafia bosses. Australian crime families have had their assets frozen by the goverment.
The most famous person in Australia's history is Ned Kelly, a robber who donned a metal helmet and metal vest. There is so much interest and money to be made from Ned Kelly that it's a shame he lived in a time before there was any notion of business franchise.

I wouldn't be surprised if David Hicks makes a fortune selling his story after his trial, regardless of whether he is found innocent or guilty.

Well, lex, Australia was colonized by criminals, after all :-)

I've always thought, though, that it showed how dumb the Brits were...they sat on their waterlogged, cramped island while sending the criminals to live in beautiful, sun-bathed Australia.

southfield_2001, did you know that any Australian that can trace their ancestry back to the original transported criminals feels a sense of prestige and honor?

LOL...yes. I've been to Australia about 20 times (and will actually be there again in a couple of weeks).
I love the Aussies. After World War II, some of my surviving family members moved to the States and a couple of others moved to Australia. I've often wished my grandfather had chosen Australia. We even tried to move there about five years ago but apparently being a professionally-trained couple with two children wasn't good enough...maybe my wife should have worn a burka :-(

southfield_2001, as far as I know, immigration to Australia is rampant as the government actively encourages immigrants from China,Africa, and India.
