Useless Scientific Research

I've always been fond of reading my daily dose of useless scientific research in the daily paper.
Till now, I'd never heard of the Ig Nobel awards. They've been around for a few years and are awarded by Nobel prizewinners for (you guessed it) the most useless scientific research.

This years winner are:

  • Medicine - Dr Fesmire for "termination of intractable hiccups with digital rectal massage".
  • CSIRO scientists Piers Barnes and Nic Svenson (Aus) for Mathematics. For calculating how many photos must be taken to ensure nobody spoils one from blinking.
  • Ivan Schwab, of the University of California,Davis, Ornithology - for research on why woodpeckers do not get headaches.
  • Nutrition - for research showing dung beetles prefer the faeces of horses and dogs to those of camels and foxes.
  • Acoustics - for research on why people dislike the sound of fingernails scraping on a blackboard.
  • Physics - research into why dry spaghetti often broke into more than two pieces when bent.
