Celibacy and Religion

Pope Benedict XVI during visit to São Paulo, B...Image via Wikipedia I've mentioned in other blogs the disturbing link between religious obsession and the preoccupation with sex.
Now, the Vatican reaffirms its stance on celibacy.
One wonders, with all the other issues facing the world today, with all the other moral/religious issues that need attention, the Catholic church preoccupies itself with sex.

Sex and priests, sex and abortion, sex and contraception.

The truth about celibacy is that it isn't necessary. It's not a precondition to believing in God, it's not required in the strict sense to being a priest. The Orthodox church for example has no problem with married priests.

The real reason for the imposition of celibacy is that the Catholic priests were so lascivious and lecherous that the public began to loose respect for them and the Catholic church. Don't believe the contorted arguments put forward by apologists for celibacy - they are only instruments of the propaganda machine of the church, and dogma.

Read Boccaccios' The Decameron to get a real feeling for what was happening around 1300.
Don't forget to look up the history of the Papacy where you will find many popes who not only had illegitimate children, but appointed them as cardinals. And then you will know the real reason behind the celibacy policy.
