Short memories and short sighted policies

Australia is the land of the constantly surprised residents, constantly surprised that there is a drought now surprised that we have floods. As we talk about how to deal with the never ending drought and how to restrict our water use, as we contemplate a restriction on electricity supply because power stations use water boiled by coal to turn turbines to generate electricity, the inevitable floods have arrived. And all people are talking about is the drought.

Seems silly to me that nobody has the capacity for long term thinking and long term planning. Instead we are a nation of panic merchants, whipping ourselves into a frenzy of surprise, indignation and woe about what is so blatantly obvious that nobody wants to see it. That is, that Australia is a continent of extremes, it always has been and not just for the last 200 years since European settlement.
Nevertheless, people continue to go about their daily lives as if flood and drought are anomalies, as if they weren't expected, shouldn't be expected and even worse, that no contingency plan for these natural disasters has ever been put into place. Pathetic isn't it? Short sighted isn't it?

People are goofballs. Here in Canada, people complain that winter has been very long every year in March. Winter lasts well into April every year. It is not unusual to wear a winter coat at the beginning of May. People have short memories of what came before and romantacize it so much that when it happens the same, but different from how they've chosen to remember, they think they've been betrayed somehow.

Jeannie, it's no surprise that people are the same all over the world. In Australia this stupidity has gone well beyond just whinging because it's affecting our lifestyle ie imposing water restrictions in the middle of the wet season.

Yes, but have they taken away all the good fireworks? When I moved to Colorado, that was the way. Pussies. How can we claim to be the "Land of the free" when I can't buy M-80's? It's my inalienable right to blow shit up.

Stucco, I can't understand how different states can have different laws. It's the same bullshit in Australia.

Stucco, I forgot to mention that pornography for example is illegal in all states of Australia except in the capital city Canberra, where our government resides. This is the center for pornography distribution and manufacture and it is legal. Go figure that one.

It's typical ignorance of authorities. I'm sure they care for that THEY have everything in order for all seasons, but don't really care about the populatin of the country.

You have to prepare yourself.

Pornography is illegal but prostitution is legal? That's a head-scratcher for sure.

Southfield, pornography is from the Greek "porn" for prostitute and "graphi" for image. In effect pornography is the visual depiction of prostitution. That's just academic of course. The insanity is to allow brothels to operate legally whilst banning pornography for moral reasons I suppose...it is readily available at any adult shop although technically banned.
