Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans

Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans.
John Lennon

The ultimate irony of John Lennon's wisdom is his death.

What's uncanny is that this concept also applies to government. As they plan strategies and policies for the future, inevitably things happen that are unforeseen by the self-appointed gurus known as the experts.

There is a Royal Commission (aka public inquiry) happening at the moment into the disaster referred to as Black Saturday when bushfires destroyed many rural towns and took the lives of around 200 people.

Various excerpts about how the CFA had "worlds best practice" and how Americans were studying our methods of dealing with bushfire crisis seem incredible and bizarre.

The failure of the emergency plans is self- evident. The failure to predict the possible outcomes of that day is tragic. The irony that experts did predict accurately what happened but weren't consulted by those in charge of dealing with the crisis is bizarre.

The inability to co-ordinate an early warning system because of doubts to it's efficacy seem incredulous.

Reporting that the town of Marysville was safe after the fact that he had burn't down is just mind boggling.

And the full inquiry isn't over yet.

The words of John Lennon's wisdom keep ringing in my ears.

I thought this was one of my more inspired posts but a lack of comments indicates to me that I've over reached my capacity to be interesting to my small band of followers.

Sorry Lex. If it's any consolation, I used this concept at a post at Eyes the other day... ;-)
