9/11 was the turning point in American consciousness. This was the moment America woke up to realize that they had an enemy that was out to destroy them. Who?What? Why? Nobody had any answers. Should America have been as surprised as they were? Walid Phares says no. He then goes on the explain the concept of "Jihad"within the context of Islam. This needs to be understood within the context of the history of Islam. In fact, 1923 is the turning point, when Attaturk eliminates the Caliphate. Islam no longer has a central control as they have had for centuries. The Mullahs take it on themselves to declare Jihad whereas before this was the exclusive right of the Caliph.
The Caliphate was the glory of the Muslim Empire that spanned three continents.
The aspirations of the Jihadists, to restore the Caliphate is driving force behind world terrorism.
Strategies of Jihad.
The Jihadists are pragmatic and patient. They are not in a hurry to achieve their goal.
During WWII they allegiance was with the Nazis because the Nazis were anti-semites. Enemy No.1 for the Jihadists is the State of Israel. An abomination in the heart of what once was the Caliphate. Enemy No.2 is Marxism because it is the antithesis of Islam, there is no room for any religion in a Communist state. Long term goals mean that temporary alliances (as in with the Nazis) are acceptable in the Jihad strategy. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"
Enemy No.3 is U.S.A.
Jihad against the U.S.A
There are six simultaneous strategies used against America:
- Economic Jihad
- Ideological Jihad
- Political Jihad
- Intelligence Jihad
- Subversive Jihad
- Diplomatic Jihad
Future Jihad
Because America has woken up to the threat and is quickly realizing the nature of the enemy, Jihadists will evolve new strategies. Whilst America puts a face to its enemy as Osama Bin Laden, the Jihadist movement continues relentlessly and spreads throughout the world.
Bin Laden has unwittingly awakened America and the world to a threat that would have continued its progress unrecognized whereas now the enemy has been exposed.
Jihad is fermenting on a global front, from Europe to Russia, Asia, South East Asia, Australia, China, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.
The Jihadist tactics will change to suit the situation and it is up to the west to identify and combat this movement.
