Freedom of Speech

Freedom of Speech

The right to Freedom of Speech is enshrined in the America Constitution.

In Australia people live under the illusion that we have a right to free speech but it is only implied and not enshrined in any law. Australians are in fact on shaky ground when it comes to expressing their opinions. The Libel Law restricts us from slandering the reputation of any other individual. We must tread carefully. Bloggers beware!

The right to say something that is offensive to others or that others don’t wish to hear is in fact the essence of Freedom of Speech.

I make a small gesture on Gripes of Wrath with the image of the cartoon that infuriated those who do not understand or accept the concept of Freedom of Speech. See top right hand. The artist is now a fugitive in fear of his life.

I urge other readers to do the same, a small gesture of defiance and a statement of what is most valuable to us as individuals in a society where our freedoms are diminishing at a rapid rate.

Hammer, at least you can carry a gun for personal protection in America. In Australia we can get arrested merely for carrying a knife.

lex: we have a saying in America: Better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6.

Still it's a very tough way to live.
